Appel à contributions : Mysticism and/as Love Theory

Lieu : Nimègue (Pays-Bas)

Dates : 28-29 novembre 2019

Date limite de réponse à l’appel : 1er juin 2019

What is love? Though we all know the answer, this is not an easy question. Is love not a mystery in the end? Yet, is this, too, not just another answer calling for further reflection and explanation? Mystics love God. And since God is not the easiest partner, they have always felt the need to reflect upon their love profoundly. Though suspicious about theory as such, they do not shy away from reflection upon love’s mysteries. On the contrary, their writings often contain genuine ‘theories of love’. The works of Bernard of Clairvaux, Hadewijch, Ruusbroec, François de Sales, Madame Guyon, Thérèse de Lisieux or Simone Weil can all be read as such. Contemporary philosophical, theological, psychoanalytical and psychological theories of love often refer to love theories present in the mystical tradition.
